Crew’s Guide to Bonfire Night

25 October 2024

1.The Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary – Devon

The burning of Tar Barrels has been a tradition in Ottery St Mary for hundreds of years. Although its origin is unsure, it’s suspected that it was inspired by the burning of beacons that signified the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588. It’s now an annual event that sees thousands of visitors flocking the streets to witness full-sized lighted Tar Barrels as they’re rolled and carried in procession. It's a firm favourite with the locals and a must-see for anyone visiting the area this bonfire night.

2.Immersive VR experience - The Tower of London

If you’re in and around the capital, aka the scene of the infamous crime itself, then we recommend trying something a little different this bonfire night. The Tower of London offers a unique visual reality experience, bringing the Gunpowder Plot to life with an immersive journey. With recreated sets and guided actors, it’s an exciting opportunity to experience the story of Guy Faulks and the events of 5th November 1605 as it comes to life.

3.Must-see dazzling displays

Maybe you’re just wanting to wrap up and head out to a traditional firework display? There are hundreds taking place up and down the country, but we have a few favourites. Alexandra Palace in London has a fun fair for the kids and German bier festival for the grown-ups – so there’s something for everyone. Or there’s nothing quite like viewing a display from Roman fort. Segedunum Fort in Tyne and Wear is steeped in history, being the easternmost fort on Hadrian’s Wall. Visitors on or around the 5th November are promised a show like no other, watching the light-up spectacular overlooking the River Tyne. Cue the “Oohs” and “Aahs”!

James Strawbridge’s ultimate hot chocolate recipe

It wouldn’t be autumn without a warming mug of delicious hot chocolate – just the thing for enjoying at home, curled up on the sofa with a good book, or popping in a flask to sip whilst on a wholesome autumnal walk. And nothing screams bonfire night quite likeJames Strawbridge’s recipe – warming, indulgent, and with some little added twists!

Starting with your favourite hot chocolate powder, add in grated nutmeg, ground cinnamon and a small pinch of sea salt. If you want to elevate your mug of cocoa even more, finish with a generous helping of whipped cream and lightly toasted marshmallows. Yum!
