Rock pooling
Pop on your wellies and take the little ones out for a little hunt. Beautiful things can be found in the shallow waters of our beaches. Not only is it exciting to see what life is like living along the coast, but it can be a great educational activity. There's plenty of free downloadable checklists to be found online, plus a handy guide to rock pooling here from our friends at the Marine Conservation Society.

Crabbing
This is another fun activity for the whole family and the perfect activity for a sunny day along the coast. You can easily find everything you need at local seaside stores, which usually include a bucket and a crab line with a little bit attached, such as bacon or sardines. Then, sit back, relax, and wait for the crabs to come say hello! But make sure you don't overload your bucket and use seawater. And remember, once you've made some new crab friends, put them back into the water. Oh, and watch out for the pinchers!

Fossil hunting
A longtime favourite beach activity is fossil hunting! Little to no skill is required, and it's an easy way to keep the little ones entertained. But before you hit the beach, there are a few things to remember to ensure you're hunting safely along our coastlines. Keep your children away from the cliffs, as subsidence can be really dangerous. Also, watch out for sharp objects that may have washed up on the beach. We don't want any injuries! And keep your eyes peeled on what your children are picking up and encourage them to stick to the tideline, where they can rummage through the shingle and sand. There's all sorts of fascinating treasures to be found. For more tips, follow the link here.

Coastal paths
You can't head to the sea without exploring the Great British coastline – it's a must-do! There are thousands of coastal footpaths just waiting for the whole family (four-legged friends included) to explore. Friend of Crew, littlewightexplorers, shared her favourite sights and activities to keep the kids entertained whilst rambling. One of the best things to do is to hunt for sea glass, shells, and other treasures you can take home as keepsakes. They can even be used later to create some special artwork! Or you can do a spot of birdwatching. It's fun but also educates the kids on wildlife living on our shores.
