Now Trending: The Resurgence of the Fisherman Aesthetic

The Fisherman knit

The fisherman knit was originally created by wives of the men at sea as a means of keeping them as warm as possible from the coastal elements. Also known as the Aran jumper due to its origins in the Aran Islands, just off the coast of Ireland in the late 19th century, the jumper was commonly made from thick wool that was mostly wind and waterproof thanks to its natural lanolin coating (a waxy substance found on a sheep’s wool). Extra insulation also came from the design and pattern of the stitching; in fact, they were often unique to a family and passed down through generations.

Royal nod of approval:

The Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, herself donned the Aran ‘sweater’, having been captured wearing a cream version of the style – along with white capri trousers, slip-on decks and cat-eye sunglasses – on a sailing trip in the 60s. This image was circulated in many a fashion publication of the time, popularising the Fisherman knit and solidifying itself as a wardrobe staple even to this day. Our Chunky Cable Knit jumpers for him and her are a great option if you’re wanting to replicate the look for yourself.

Head-to-toe Fisherman style

But of course, it’s not only knitwear that sits within the Fisherman trend. Being born by the coast, we happen to know a thing or two when it comes to nautical wear. Our forever-favourite Breton is piece steeped in history from the ocean – and you can read all about here. And then there’s the Capri trouser. Effortlessly stylish and arguably one of the most versatile pair of summer trousers you can own; we’ve even written a guide on all the ways you can style them here.

A waterproof layer is obviously a must – something like our Lowther jacket will keep you warm and protected from the elements. And lastly, no fisherman look is complete without a pair of iconic deck shoes. They were designed for being by the water.
