Places to eat & drink

The Cott Inn at Dartington

Serving the locals and visitors since the 1300’s is The Cott Inn, situated in the small yet picturesque village of Dartington, lying next to the medieval town of Totnes. It claims to be one of the oldest thatched inns in Britain, serving food, accommodation and breathtaking views over the rural Devonshire countryside. Offering a menu of delicious food using naturally reared meats, fresh produce and local line-caught fish – it’s no wonder it’s the owner of numerous awards and why Claire raves about this place as a top spot to eat. We recommend trying their Cott Inn Fish and Chips, washed down with a local ale. Cheers!

Rumours Wine Bar and Restaurant

Set in a stunning 14th century building that has had previous lives as a jazz bar and toffee factory (just to name a couple!), is Rumours. Now a drinking spot and restaurant named after the much-loved 1986 album by Fleetwood Mac, customers can expect a cosy, romantic atmosphere, as well as sampling complimentary wines and dishes that have been carefully selected and locally sourced. In fact, the whole ethos of Rumours is to serve customers with fresh food made from only the best seasonal ingredients, as well as offering delicious drinks from local suppliers. A must if you’re visiting Totnes – although we would recommend booking to secure a table!

Things To Do:

Visit Greenway House

Author Agatha Christie, purchased the Georgian house as a holiday home in the late 1930s following the success of her famous and bestselling novels, supported with the proceeds of selling her family home in Torquay. Now owned by the National Trust, visitors can take a trip to the home and explore for themselves. Look around the house’s library, which plays host to over 5,000 books, including many of Christie’s first editions, some of which have been translated into many foreign languages. You can also view the collection of items that Agatha collected from her many years of travelling; from ancient ceramics discovered in Syria, to prehistoric shards (fragments of pottery) from Iran and more. Plus, a visit to Greenway wouldn’t be the same without taking a wander of the grounds. From the tranquil riverside woodland, croquet lawn, to the stunning walled flower gardens, there’s so much to explore.

Totnes Markets

Totnes has been holding weekly markets in its bustling town square for hundreds of years and still thrives today, with locals and visitors to the area enjoying mooching around the stalls. Every Friday and Saturday from 9am – 4pm, traders assemble selling a range of locally sourced foods, plants, antiques and more. But that’s not all, every 3rd Sunday of the month the Totnes Sunday Food and Craft Market opens, with more delicious produce to enjoy, as well as homemade gifts and crafts up for grabs. A must-visit for a wholesome weekend activity, followed up with lunch at one of the nearby pubs or restaurants.
