Spotlight on: The Breton
27 March 2024
Timeless, versatile, and forever iconic, the trusty Breton has been a failsafe addition to our line-up for the past three decades. Over the years, we’ve experimented with the sleeve length, colourways and have even added embellishments in the form of buttons and appliques for an extra-special twist. But one thing’s for sure, when it comes to the Breton, the stripes do all the talking.

The history of the Breton
Having humble beginnings as a knitted fishing shirt, designed for optimum warmth but lightweight enough for practicality, the striped Breton became the official naval uniform of France in the 17th century. Many French sailors were from Brittany, which is where the name ‘Breton’ originated. Designed originally with 21 stripes – one for each of Napolean’s victories against the British – the Breton was soon worn by all men of the sea. With its distinctive design, seafarers and sailors could be easily spotted should they go overboard. Traditionally made from cotton, it featured a boat neck for easy dressing, and three-quarter length sleeves to hide underneath jackets. Gradually, the Breton influenced fashion across Europe – the first World War marked its emergence into society when Coco Chanel – inspired by sailors on the French Riveria – introduced it to her collection in the early 20th century.
