The great wardrobe spring clean – 5 tips to follow this season
9 February 2024
This spring, we’re hitting reset. Which means we’re giving our wardrobes a much-needed spring clean to make room for some new additions. In desperate need of doing the same? Keep reading for our 5 top tips on how to de-clutter your space this season.

Critique your clothes
It might be obvious, but asking yourself whether you still actually love an item is important, as well as knowing if something still fits. We get it, we’re all guilty of hanging onto certain pieces ‘just in case’ they fit further down the line, or if they might be handy for that particular outfit you may or may not decide to wear 6 months from now. Have a good look at your clothes and take note of those that may have stains, holes, or simply are a little snug and consider recycling or donating. Trust us, you’ll feel much better for it knowing you’ll free up space for new, smile-inducing picks that will happily take their spot on the hanger.

Storage is your best friend
There are ample storage solutions to ensure you’re making the most of your space. Firstly, the vacuum bags. Each season, go through your wardrobe and store your non-seasonal pieces away. Vacuum bags are great for this, as they take up hardly any space at all and can be easily stacked. Secondly, use thin, felt hangers in your wardrobe. Not only do they grip onto your clothes better, but they’re slimmer meaning you can fit more items in. And lastly, fold knitwear! This is a great way to avoid hanger dents in your favourite jumpers, but also removes the bulkiness from your hanging space. Simply fold neatly into drawers and pop in a scented garment bag to leave them smelling fresh each time you wear them.

The hanger trick
A great hack if you’re not sure what items in your wardrobe you wear on a regular basis. Simply turn all your hangers around on the rail, and once you’ve worn a piece, hang it back in the opposite direction. This way, after a few months, you can easily tell which styles you’ve been wearing and which pieces you might consider selling or donating.

The ‘one year’ rule
Following the above hanger trick, any items in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn in the past 12 months, it’s time to say goodbye to. Not only are they clearly not loved enough, but it’ll clear out some much-needed space for you to fill with new pieces that truly make you happy and excited to wear. Remember, sometimes you need to be strict… as hard as it is bidding farewell to once-loved garments – they can easily make the next person even more thrilled to wear.

Love it or list it
Don’t throw away any unwanted clothes! Use sites such as Ebay, Vinted or even Thrift+ to sell any items you have no need for anymore. It’s a great way to free up some space in your wardrobe but also earn some extra cash. Of course, the handy charity shop is another option, donating your pre-loved goods to a much-deserved charity of your choice. Remember, it’s always a good idea to take note of any gaps in your wardrobe so you can fill these as and when the perfect piece comes your way – for us, the one in, one out rule is always a handy concept to follow to ensure that you don’t overspend and overfill your space once again.
