If you’ve made a purchase with us this Valentine’s weekend, you’ll find a little packet of forget-me-not seeds tucked inside your navy and white package. Think of it as a gift that’ll keep on giving back.
Once wildflowers such as forget-me-nots are planted, environmental benefits bloom. From honeybees to butterflies and birds, they grow into natural havens for all sorts of creatures great and small. They provide important food sources for pollinating insects and prevent erosion by stabilising the soil with their root systems - a clear win for our crumbling coastlines. Like all plants they also absorb CO2 and pollution, removing toxins from the air.
From streams to shorelines and shady gardens, forget-me-nots will sprout up pretty much anywhere with wild abandon. One variety is even native to sand dunes. Here’s how to grow yours in a plant pot or you could even scatter them along your local coastline. Top tip: forget-me-nots aren’t picky but they prefer shady spots with lots of water.
1.FIND A POT, FILL WITH COMPOST AND MOISTEN THE SURFACE.
2. SPRINKLE THE SEEDS EVENLY OVER THE COMPOST.
3. COVER THE POTS AND PUT THEM IN A WARM PLACE.
4. UNCOVER THE SEEDLINGS ONCE THEY GERMINATE AND TRANSPLANT THEM TO A SHADED PLACE. SEEDS GERMINATE IN 14-21 DAYS.
